Leave It

Last night we worked on “leave it” with Bentley. Regardless of how you feel or what’s going on, it’s critical to find time to work with your dogs. I’ve been a little lax on that recently too and it showed. It took a couple of attempts to get this shot and being a lab, he’s always hungry so I knew that the few treats he got wouldn’t deter him from trying for more. This work develops self-control and patience in your dog and it can be wiped out pretty quick without daily attention and work.

It’s the same for us as humans. If we aren’t always practicing patience, kindness, self-control, etc., we’ll eventually lose our ability when things happen. I experienced that myself recently. Only it wasn’t because God wasn’t trying to work with me every day. It’s because I’m stubborn. (I’m sure that comes as no surprise to many of you!) I jumped to conclusions and got wrapped up in my head and emotions. Thankfully, the work that had been done before kept anything too crazy from happening and I truly believe all is well.

We all get “lazy” from time to time. We all test our limits and our boundaries and when we think we’ve got an opening, most of us bolt. Free will is a beautiful, yet dangerous thing. Thankfully, God is forgiving and while not always gentle in his corrections it’s always in our best interest. He gives us work every day to practice in many different ways so that when it comes time to use our skills, we’re ready. It’s just up to us to not be too lazy or too stubborn to listen before He has to correct us.
